New Delhi: In the Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (11 June 2025), two multitracking projects of Indian Railways have been approved, covering seven districts of Jharkhand, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to the central government, these initiatives will improve travel facilities, reduce logistics costs, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which will promote sustainable and efficient rail operations.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that 133 km double lane between Koderma to Barkakana has been approved, costing Rs 3,063 crore. This will reduce the distance between Patna and Ranchi. It will provide good connectivity to Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh districts.
On the Koderma-Barkakana multitracking project of Indian Railways in Jharkhand, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “According to the calculations of experts, the amount of carbon dioxide from this project will be equal to planting seven crore trees. This will also save 32 crore liters of diesel annually in the country. This will benefit 938 villages and a population of 15 lakhs. It can carry 30.4 million tonnes of additional goods, which will also prove to be good from the environmental point of view as opposed to sending goods by road.”
The central government has approved the Ballari-Chikjajur multitracking project of Indian Railways in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It will be double laned, which will improve connectivity with Mangalore Port. Regarding this, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “Under this project, 185 km of railway line will be doubled, which will cost Rs 3,342 crore.” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says, “During PM Modi’s historic third term, several projects have been launched to reduce transportation and logistics costs. A recent study by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta shows that investments in transportation have reduced the country’s logistics costs by about 4 per cent.”
