Nature’s Triple Attack on the US! Devastating floods, raging wildfires, and suffocating smoke

July 18, 2026

New Delhi: The United States is currently grappling with a triple assault from nature. On one hand, severe flooding is wreaking havoc in Texas for the third consecutive day; on the other, wildfires have spiraled out of control across 15 states; meanwhile, smoke drifting from Canada has blanketed the eastern part of the country in a toxic haze. The situation is so critical that millions of people have been advised to stay indoors.

According to the US agency National Interagency Fire Center, 68 large wildfires are currently burning across the country. In the Pacific Northwest region alone, 17 new fires ignited following lightning strikes. More than 17,400 firefighters and military personnel, along with 140 helicopters and four military C-130 air tankers, have been deployed to bring these fires under control.

So far this year, approximately 3.72 million acres of land have burned in the US—an increase of over one million acres compared to the same period last year. Experts attribute this to reduced snowfall in mountainous areas and prolonged droughts, which have made forests far more susceptible to fire than ever before.

  • Flood-like conditions due to record rainfall
Meanwhile, the havoc caused by floods continues in the Hill Country region of Texas. Since Tuesday, some areas have recorded over 27 inches of rainfall. Two deaths have been confirmed due to the flooding, while hundreds of people have been safely evacuated. Officials have warned that river water levels could rise further, even as the rainfall subsides.

Smoke from Canada Darkens the Skies
Meanwhile, smoke rising from Canadian wildfires has spread across the US Midwest, Northeast, and Washington D.C. More than 100 million people are under air quality alerts. Chicago recorded the second-worst air quality in the world, prompting the temporary closure of parks and beaches.

Warning to Take Climate Change More Seriously
Climate scientists state that these three disasters are not isolated incidents but part of a larger picture linked to climate change. Rising global temperatures are fueling droughts and wildfires on one hand, while increased atmospheric moisture is leading to a rise in events like record rainfall and flooding. According to experts, if this trend continues, such compound natural disasters could become increasingly common in the coming years.
