PM Modi’s Major Announcement in Australia: Big Bash Comes to India; Chennai to Host Australia’s T20 League Opener

Dallas. Australia’s prestigious T20 cricket league, the Big Bash League (BBL), is set to make its debut in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced this historic initiative on Friday. Under this plan, the opening match of the 16th season of the Big Bash League will be played on December 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match will feature a clash between the Melbourne Renegades and the defending champions, the Perth Scorchers.

First Foreign Cricket League to Play in India
This match will be historic in many ways. The Big Bash League will become the first foreign cricket league to host a match in India. The event will also be a major highlight of the week-long Australian cultural festival taking place in India in December. Cricket Australia believes that hosting the match in India—the world’s largest cricket market—will significantly boost the league’s popularity and viewership.

Season Opener in Chennai
Cricket Australia has confirmed that the match will be played on December 12 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 38,000. The Melbourne Renegades will serve as the host team for this match. The game is scheduled to start at 2:40 PM local time (approximately 10:00–10:30 AM Indian Standard Time). In India, it will be broadcast on JioStar, while in Australia, it will be aired live on Channel Seven, 7plus, Kayo Sports, and Fox Cricket.

Cricket as a Bridge Between the Two Nations
Alistair Dobson, General Manager of Big Bash Leagues at Cricket Australia, described the decision as significant for the relationship between the two countries. He stated, “Our sport has a natural and strong connection with India. This match is part of a major initiative by the governments of both nations.” “Cricket serves as a bridge connecting the two nations, and we hope this will become the most-watched match in the history of any domestic sports league in Australia.”

He further added, “The immense popularity of the Big Bash League globally—and particularly in India—is often underestimated in Australia. We are confident that playing a match in India will further boost public interest in the competition and its teams.”

Why was Chennai chosen?
According to Cricket Australia, Chennai was selected with the concurrence of the BCCI and the Australian Consulate General. Given the city’s passionate cricketing culture and the massive fan base of the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, it was deemed the ideal venue for this historic match. Cricket Australia hopes that this initiative will give the Big Bash League a new identity in India and further strengthen sporting ties between the two countries in the future.
