New Delhi: Russia has said that it will continue to supply oil to India and will also give a discount of about 5% on it. Russia’s Deputy Trade Representative Evgeny Griva said that this discount will depend on business talks. He said that despite political pressure, India will continue to import almost as much oil from Russia as it has been doing so far. Russia’s Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin also expressed confidence that India-Russia energy partnership will continue despite external pressures.
Meanwhile, America has alleged that India is indirectly funding the Ukraine war by buying oil from Russia. For this reason, America has imposed a 50% tariff on India. America says that India buys Russia’s oil and provides it with dollars and sells the banned oil to other countries at a high price. Apart from this, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt said that President Donald Trump has imposed this tariff on India to put indirect pressure on Russia and end the war.
However, India termed the US decision as ‘unfair and unjust’ and said that it will have a bad effect on sectors like textile, marine and leather. Prime Minister Narendra Modi clearly said that India will not bow down to any economic pressure. He said that India will take decisions only after looking at its needs and national interests.
The advantage of Russian oil for India is that it can be traded at a lower cost, making it an important means of keeping domestic inflation under control. India has separated from America amid tariff threats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Russian leader Putin as his ‘friend’ after talks with him this week and New Delhi has taken steps towards strengthening relations with China. Modi is going to visit China at the end of August. This will be his first visit to China in seven years. Where he will meet President Xi Jinping.
