Nagarkurnool (Telangana). There has been no contact so far with the workers trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal Tunnel in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana for the last four days. Work is going on to remove water and mud from the tunnel, but as time passes, concerns are increasing about the well-being of the workers. Members of the Army and NDRF are already engaged in rescue work. Now geologists from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and National Geographical Research Institute (NGRI) have also been called to assess the situation and help in the rescue work.
Nagarkurnool District Collector B Santosh, who is monitoring the rescue operations, said that the stability of the tunnel has been kept in mind before taking any further steps. Work is also going on to drain water from the tunnel. Taking advice from GSI and NGRI. Australian experts associated with L&T have also been called to assess the situation. Due to the filling of mud and debris, we are not able to go inside the last 40-50 meters, where the workers are trapped.
Important decision possible on rescue operation
Sources said that the state government may soon take some important decision regarding the rescue operation. Despite the tireless efforts of the Indian Army, Navy, NDRF and other agencies, there has been no success in the rescue operation yet.
The rescue team had to go through thick mud, entangled iron rods and cement blocks to reach the accident site in the tunnel to rescue the people. Official sources said that a team of 584 skilled personnel from the Army, Navy, Singareni Collieries and other agencies along with central and state disaster relief teams have inspected the tunnel seven times. Gas cutters are working continuously to cut the iron rods.
