Union Minister says BJP can form government in Punjab on its own, Bittu not in favor of alliance with Akali Dal

Chandigarh: Union Minister of State (MoS) Ravneet Singh Bittu said on Friday that the BJP can come to power in Punjab on its own and does not need to form an alliance with its former partner, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). When asked at a protest over law and order and other issues whether the BJP could form an alliance with the SAD, the Minister of State for Railways said that no such talks were underway. Bittu also said that the Akalis have many different factions.

Bittu takes aim at the Akali Dal
Bittu said that drugs and gangsterism were common during the Akali Dal’s rule. He questioned whether an alliance would be for these things. Reacting to Bittu’s statement, AAP leader Baltej Pannu said that Bittu has raised very serious questions by publicly saying that an alliance with Badal (SAD) would mean the return of ‘chitta’ (synthetic drugs) and gangsterism in Punjab.

Pannu asked Bittu, “If they know that the Akalis were responsible for pushing Punjab into drug and gangster violence, why are some BJP leaders in Punjab so vehemently advocating for an alliance with them?”

BJP Protests Against Government
Several senior Punjab BJP leaders participated in the party’s protest. The BJP attempted to surround Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s house. However, they were stopped by police. Police briefly detained several leaders, including Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar and Manoranjan Kalia. Targeting the AAP government, Jakhar said that the common man is not safe in Punjab today and “gangster rule” prevails.

Earlier, in October 2025, Bittu had said that the BJP would contest all 117 seats in the state. The SAD had broken ties with the NDA in 2020 over the issue of the three now-repealed agricultural laws.
