New Delhi. India and US relations have now reached the lowest level in the last several decades. India does not seem to get any relief from US President Donald Trump’s tariff in the coming days. According to sources, India got a big shock on Saturday when the US postponed the sixth round of talks on the proposed bilateral trade agreement. This meeting was to be held in Delhi from 25 August to 29 August. An American official informed that this visit will probably be rescheduled.
Five rounds completed so far
So far five rounds of talks have been completed between India and the US regarding trade. The sixth round of talks was to be held, but now it has been postponed. The postponement of this meeting is a big setback for India. Because the extra 25 percent i.e. a total of 50 percent tariff imposed by the US on India will come into effect from August 27.
The US wants to do more trade in India’s agriculture and dairy sector. But India has made it clear that it will not compromise on the interests of its farmers. India is an agricultural country and if the US market enters India’s agricultural market, it will cause huge economic loss.
Target to double trade
The US and India have been doing trade on a large scale for a long time. The target has been set to complete the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement by September-October 2025. Also, a plan has been made to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Currently, trade between the two is $191 billion.
Effect of US tariff
The US has imposed a 25 percent tariff on India since August 7. An additional 25 percent punitive tariff has been imposed on India for buying crude oil and military equipment from Russia. Which will come into effect from August 27.
Growing trade
According to Commerce Ministry data, India’s exports to the US grew 21.64% to $33.53 billion between April-July 2025, while imports grew 12.33% to $17.41 billion. The US remained India’s largest trading partner during this period.
