New Delhi: Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made a big decision. She has announced a U-turn on her retirement. Vinesh Phogat had distanced herself from the sport in August this year and then entered politics. But she is now ready to return to the mat. Vinesh Phogat shared this update with her fans by posting on social media. Her sights are now set on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Sharing a post on Instagram, Vinesh Phogat wrote, “People often ask me if Paris was my last journey? I didn’t have an answer to this question for a long time. I needed to get away from the mat, the pressure, the expectations, even my dreams. For the first time in years, I breathed a sigh of relief. I took some time to understand my responsibilities. The ups and downs of life, the sacrifices, the versions of myself that the world has never seen. I still love the sport. I still want to compete.”
Vinesh Phogat further wrote, “In the silence, I found something I had forgotten – ‘the fire never goes out’. It was only suppressed under exhaustion and noise. Discipline, routine, fight… it’s in my system. No matter how far I went, a part of me is still on the mat. So here I am, with a fearless heart and a spirit that refuses to bow down, stepping back towards LA28. And this time, I’m not walking alone, my son is joining my team, my biggest inspiration, my little cheerleader on this journey to the 2028 Olympics.”
The Paris Olympics proved to be a nightmare for Vinesh Phogat. At the Paris Olympics, Vinesh showcased a brilliant display of wrestling and secured her place in the final of the women’s 50 kg category. However, just a few hours before the final, she was accused of being overweight and was disqualified, causing her to miss out on a medal. She had previously participated in the Rio and Tokyo Olympics but failed to win a medal there as well. Despite these setbacks, Vinesh is ready to try again.
