Hope of postponing Nimisha Priya’s hanging alive, hearing will be held in Supreme Court on this day

New Delhi: Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, trapped in Yemen, is to be hanged on July 16. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has accepted the petition in this matter. The Supreme Court will hear the petition of an organization called Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council on July 14. The petition has sought immediate instructions to the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs to stop the hanging. Nimisha Priya is accused of killing a citizen in Yemen.

The petition has demanded that the Government of India should be urged to facilitate negotiations for the payment of blood money. Blood money is a legal provision under Sharia law according to which compensation is given to the victim’s family so that the punishment given to the culprit can be pardoned. Petitioner’s lawyer Rageant Basant on Thursday placed the matter before a double bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Rageant Basant.

During this, Basant told that the gravity of the situation should be considered in view of the date of execution. He said that the Yemen court has rejected Nimisha’s mercy petition. However, the court has kept the proposal of blood money open. In such a situation, the victim can be saved by talking to her family. During this, the lawyer said that very little time is left now. The bench had suggested hearing the case on Monday. On this, the lawyer said that considering the time taken in the process of the case, this case should be heard as soon as possible.

Actually, Nimisha Priya is a resident of Kochi district of Kerala. Nimisha went to Yemen in 2008. In Yemen, Nimisha was accused of killing her business partner Talal Abdo Mehdi. Since then Nimisha has been in jail. She was sentenced to death by the Yemen court in 2020. After this, the Supreme Court also upheld Nimisha’s sentence. After being disappointed by the court, Nimisha approached the President of Yemen, but she did not get relief from there either.
