New York dream will now move forward under the leadership of immigrants – Mamdani’s challenge to Trump

New Delhi: The Democratic Party has performed resoundingly and won the first major election since Donald Trump’s second term in the US. Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral election, achieving a historic victory.

According to CNN, this victory is being considered a major political success for the Democrats, “despite all odds.” In his victory speech, Mamdani said that New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, run by immigrants, and, starting tonight, will also be led by immigrants.

In his victory speech, Zohran Mamdani said, “Today we have overthrown a political dynasty. New York will now move forward as a city built by immigrants, run by immigrants, and now led by immigrants.”

He told his supporters, “The future is now in our hands. This city belongs to taxi drivers, nurses, cooks, and bodega shopkeepers—this democracy belongs to them too.” The crowd erupted in loud chants of “Zohran, Zohran!”

Mamdani recalled the 15-day hunger strike he led with Richard, a taxi driver, during his campaign and said, “Brother, we’re in City Hall now.” He said this victory was about empowering the voice of the working class.

Mamdani mentioned his opponent, Andrew Cuomo, by name, saying, “I wish him all the best in his personal life, but after tonight, this is the last time I’m mentioning his name.”

According to political analysts, this victory not only marks a new direction in New York politics but also signals the Democratic Party’s ability to craft a narrative against the Trump era.
