New Delhi: Amidst the tensions between the US and Iran, US President Donald Trump—marking a sudden shift in stance—has announced a temporary suspension of military action, a move that appears to pave a potential path for diplomacy. Both the US and Iran have agreed to the ceasefire; additionally, Israel has also consented to halt its attacks. This ceasefire is set to remain in effect for an initial period of two weeks. Further negotiations are scheduled to take place in Pakistan.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I agree to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks,” describing the move as a step toward a broader ceasefire.
The US President noted that this decision was reached following discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, both of whom had appealed for the proposed attacks to be averted. Trump also clarified that this suspension is conditional: Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a step he deemed essential for de-escalating tensions.
He wrote, “This will be a two-way ceasefire,” implying that both sides are expected to stand down during this two-week period. Trump further asserted that military objectives have already been achieved and that negotiations with Tehran are nearing a decisive turning point.
“We have achieved all our military objectives—indeed, we have surpassed them—and have made significant progress toward a concrete agreement for long-term peace,” Trump stated. He also revealed that Washington has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a viable foundation for negotiations. According to Trump, consensus has already been reached on most of the critical issues.
Two-Week Ceasefire to Provide Assistance
US President Donald Trump stated that this two-week ceasefire would provide both sides with an opportunity to finalize an agreement, signaling that this long-standing conflict may now be nearing a resolution.
Notably, this announcement by Trump came just minutes before the expiration of a deadline he had previously set. Last night, Trump had issued a threat warning that the entire civilization of Iran would be obliterated. This statement by Trump was widely interpreted as a threat of a nuclear strike. The remark drew significant criticism even within the United States. However, this sudden shift in circumstances has brought a sense of relief to the world. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the negotiations—scheduled to take place in Pakistan—will proceed, and on which specific points the United States and Iran will ultimately be able to reach an agreement.
White House Issues Statement
The White House has also issued a statement regarding the announcement of a ceasefire with Iran. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that negotiations would continue. Leavitt added that President Trump’s statement would determine the future course of action.
The basis for the negotiations will be determined by the President’s stance. Leavitt remarked that the fact of the matter is that our President—along with our powerful military—has successfully persuaded Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and that further negotiations will now proceed.
