New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently in full swing across India. The final match of IPL 2026 is scheduled to be played on May 31. Following this, Team India will take the field. The Indian team is set to play a Test and ODI series in June, and the squad for these fixtures has now been announced.
Specifically, Team India will host the Afghanistan team in June. A single Test match and a three-match ODI series will be played between the two sides. Consequently, a meeting of the Men’s Selection Committee was held in Guwahati on May 19, during which the Indian squads for both the Test and ODI series were selected. The solitary Test match is set to commence on June 6 in Mullanpur, and a 14-member Indian squad has been announced for the occasion.
Notably, this will mark Afghanistan’s first Test match against India since 2018. It was in 2018 that Afghanistan officially made their Test debut at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India won that match by an innings and 262 runs.
Virat and Rohit Retain Their Spots
Fifteen players have been selected for the ODI series against Afghanistan, a list that includes both Virat and Rohit Sharma. However, Rishabh Pant has been left out of India’s ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the vice-captaincy of the Test team has been entrusted to KL Rahul. Previously, the vice-captaincy of the Test squad was held by Pant; however, Pant has managed to retain his place within the Test squad itself. Once again, star bowler Mohammed Shami has been overlooked. Ajit Agarkar has explicitly stated that the Selection Committee did not even discuss Mohammed Shami’s name during the meeting.
Two New Faces Given Opportunities in Both Test and ODI Squads
India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has been rested for the entire series against Afghanistan to help manage his workload ahead of the upcoming tour of England. Several new faces have been included in both squads, including Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, and Prince Yadav. Manav Suthar has been named in the Test squad for the first time. Meanwhile, Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey have successfully secured spots in both squads. Additionally, Prince Yadav makes his maiden appearance in the ODI squad.
