New Delhi: During a meeting of the Congress party’s Minority Advisory Committee, Rahul Gandhi—the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha—made a significant political statement, asserting that the departure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is inevitable within the next year. According to Congress sources, Rahul Gandhi stated that the prevailing global economic conditions, coupled with growing economic discontent within the country, would be the primary catalysts for this outcome. He remarked that given the way circumstances are unfolding and the rising resentment among the public, the impact of these factors will soon become evident in Indian politics.
During the meeting, some leaders appealed for the use of the term “minority” instead of specifically using the word “Muslim.” Expressing his disagreement with this suggestion, Rahul Gandhi asserted that there is no need for apprehension; one must openly stand in solidarity with any community that is facing injustice. He emphasized that whether the group in question consists of Hindus, Dalits, upper castes, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, or Buddhists and Jains—the Congress party must raise its voice to champion the rights of all.
According to sources, Congress leader Imran Masood stated during the meeting that the party needs to shift the prevailing narrative that the Muslim community votes solely for the purpose of defeating the BJP. He argued that the Congress must convey a clear message to the Muslim community—highlighting the substantial work the party has undertaken for their welfare—and seek their support on this very basis, thereby preventing the BJP from engaging in the politics of majoritarian polarization.
During the meeting, several leaders voiced their grievances to Rahul Gandhi, pointing out that while he himself openly champions issues concerning minorities, other senior leaders within the party tend to refrain from speaking on these matters. The leaders suggested that other party functionaries should also follow Rahul Gandhi’s example and speak out vocally on minority-related issues. The meeting, which lasted for over two hours, was organized by Imran Pratapgarhi, the Chairman of the Congress Minority Department.
In addition to representatives from the Muslim community, the meeting of the Congress Minority Advisory Committee also saw the participation of representatives from the Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, and Jain communities. The primary objective behind this inclusive approach was to ensure that all major minority communities across the country were adequately represented during the deliberations. Gurdeep Sappal from the Sikh community, Hibi from the Christian community, Rajendra Pal Gautam from the Buddhist community, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi from the Jain community participated in this meeting.
