June 16, 2026

New Delhi: A scuffle broke out between young Indian batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sri Lankan players during a tri-series match between India A and Sri Lanka A in Dambulla. The match ended in a tie, leading to a Super Over decider where India A suffered a defeat. During the match, Vaibhav lost his cool and got into an argument with a Sri Lankan player. The situation escalated into a physical altercation involving shoving, before other players intervened to calm things down.

India A Loses in Super Over
The thrilling match between India A and Sri Lanka A on Monday was decided by a Super Over, with hosts Sri Lanka A defeating India A by six runs to claim the top spot in the points table. Both teams scored 265 runs in their allotted 50 overs, forcing the match into a Super Over. Batting first in the Super Over, Sri Lanka A scored 16 runs, setting a target of 17 for India A. Under pressure, the India A team crumbled and managed to score only 10 runs. Consequently, Sri Lanka A won the Super Over by six runs. With this victory, Sri Lanka A secured three points and moved to the top of the points table, while India A suffered their second defeat of the tournament.

  • How the Dispute Began
The incident occurred after the final ball of the Super Over was bowled by Kugathas Mathulan to Vaibhav. India A needed eight runs off the last ball. Mathulan delivered a brilliant yorker that Vaibhav failed to connect with. Following this, the bowler began to celebrate, and other Sri Lanka A players joined in. The exact reason for Suryavanshi’s outburst remains unclear, but it is speculated that he was provoked either by the manner of Mathulan’s celebration or by something said to him after the match concluded.

It appeared he took issue with the decision to proceed with a Super Over despite the poor lighting conditions. Following the match, Vaibhav engaged in a heated argument with the opposing players and shoved a Sri Lankan player. Even then, his anger did not subside; as he walked away, he was seen continuing to verbally lash out at the opposing player.

    Niroshan Dickwella defused the situation
Observing the escalating tension, Sri Lankan player Niroshan Dickwella intervened to separate Suryavanshi and calm the situation. Even during the post-match handshakes, Suryavanshi did not appear pleased; his teammates eventually calmed him down and escorted him toward the pavilion. Commentators remarked that the situation was unfortunate, especially given the thrilling nature of the match.

Tilak Varma discussed the matter with the umpires
When the match ended in a tie after the scheduled overs, it was initially unclear whether a Super Over would take place. The umpires were concerned that continuing play might be difficult due to the late hour and poor lighting conditions. Indian captain Tilak Varma held a lengthy discussion with the umpires, insisting that a Super Over be played. After some deliberation, the decision was finally made to proceed with the Super Over.

The final ball of the Super Over sparked controversy
A fresh controversy arose on the final ball of Sri Lanka’s innings during the Super Over. The Sri Lankan batsman was caught out off a full-toss delivery from Indian bowler Arshad Khan. The umpire immediately declared the batsman out, and the Indian players left the field celebrating. However, replays revealed that the delivery was above the batsman’s waist and should have been called a no-ball. Consequently, the umpires reversed their decision and recalled the Indian players to the field, granting Sri Lanka the opportunity to replay the final delivery. Vaibhav Suryavanshi has courted controversy before
15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s aggressive style has frequently been a topic of discussion. During the 2025 Under-19 Asia Cup final against Pakistan, he faced significant criticism for gesturing towards the opposing bowler with his shoe after getting out. Additionally, he was involved in a heated exchange with rival players during the Super Six stage match against Pakistan in the 2026 Under-19 World Cup.

Vaibhav fails to fire for the third consecutive match
Amidst the controversies, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s performance has also become a cause for concern. He failed to play a substantial innings for the third match in a row during the ODI tri-series. He scored 21 runs in the match against Sri Lanka. The Indian batting lineup also appeared to struggle significantly; Anukul Roy (8), Nishant Sindhu (6), Ayush Badoni (15), and Prabhsimran Singh (11) all returned to the pavilion with low scores.
