Monsoon Session: Parliament’s Monsoon Session Likely to Begin on July 20; Expected to Last Three Weeks

New Delhi. Details regarding the Monsoon Session have emerged. The Parliament’s Monsoon Session is likely to commence on July 20 and could last for approximately three weeks. However, a final decision on this is yet to be taken by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs.

Typically, the Monsoon and Winter sessions comprise 20 sittings and span four weeks. However, there have been instances in the past where the session was kept shorter. Officials indicate that this time, too, the session might last for three weeks.

This session is taking place against the backdrop of BJP’s victories in West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry. Additionally, internal rifts within the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) could also impact the proceedings of this session.

A demand from 20 TMC MPs and 6 Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs is currently pending before Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla; they are seeking recognition as separate groups. The Speaker’s decision on this matter is awaited. In the Rajya Sabha, too, newly elected and re-elected MPs have recently taken their oaths, thereby strengthening the position of the ruling NDA alliance in the Upper House.

The government suffered a major setback during the previous session. It had introduced a Constitution Amendment Bill proposing the implementation of reservation for women in legislative assemblies starting from 2029 and an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats. However, the bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha and lapsed.

The government is now reworking the bill. The aim this time is to increase Lok Sabha seats across all states uniformly by 50 percent. The earlier proposal had suggested increasing seats based on population; this had raised concerns among South Indian states and their political parties that they might receive fewer seats due to their slower population growth rates. This is precisely why parties from the southern states have been voicing objections to this issue from the very beginning. It remains to be seen whether the new proposal can address this concern.

Thus, the upcoming monsoon session is set to be significant in many respects, with a range of issues—from seat-sharing arrangements to the internal politics of the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT)—taking center stage.
