
Tripura: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar was found dead in his office chamber at the State Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday. According to police sources, his body was found hanging inside the office. He was immediately rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12:48 PM.
Upon receiving news of the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, and senior police and administrative officials arrived at the Police Headquarters. Subsequently, they also visited GBP Hospital. The entire Police Headquarters complex has been cordoned off, and an investigation has been initiated. The state government has decided to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
No official statement regarding the cause of death has been issued yet; however, it is suspected to be a case of suicide. Police officials state that a final conclusion regarding the cause of death will be drawn only after analyzing the post-mortem report, forensic findings, and other evidence. Tripura BJP State President Abhishek Debroy also remarked that the actual cause would become clear only after the post-mortem report is received.

Originally a resident of Biharipur village in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, Anurag Dhankhar was a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre. He had assumed the office of Tripura’s Director General of Police in May 2025. During his service career spanning over three decades, he held several key responsibilities within the Tripura Police. Additionally, he had served on deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),
the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhary demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, stating that the death of the state’s police chief in this manner is a very serious matter requiring an impartial investigation to uncover the true cause. Currently, the police are investigating the case by examining all aspects. Officials state that detailed information regarding the incident will be shared only after the post-mortem report and forensic examination are completed.
