Trump Clears Saudi Uranium Enrichment Deal, Sparks Fresh Nuclear Concerns Across West Asia

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has approved a landmark civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, allowing the Kingdom to enrich uranium on its own soil as part of a peaceful nuclear energy program. The move is expected to reshape the strategic landscape of West Asia and has raised fresh concerns among nuclear non-proliferation experts.

According to reports, an official announcement of the agreement could be made soon. The proposed deal will remain in force for 30 years and is expected to involve American companies in developing Saudi Arabia’s civilian nuclear infrastructure. As part of the cooperation, both countries may jointly study the feasibility of establishing a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia.

Strategic Significance Amid Iran Rivalry
The decision comes at a time when tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran continue to influence regional politics. Analysts believe granting Saudi Arabia the right to enrich uranium could significantly impact the balance of power in the Middle East, particularly as Iran’s nuclear program remains a major point of contention with the West.

Experts Warn of Long-Term Risks
Nuclear non-proliferation experts have voiced concerns over the agreement. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously stated that if Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia would consider taking similar steps to safeguard its security.

Both the Trump and Biden administrations had pursued civil nuclear cooperation with Saudi Arabia. In contrast, the United Arab Emirates signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States under the “123 Agreement”, agreeing not to enrich uranium domestically. The UAE model has often been cited as the benchmark for safe and peaceful nuclear cooperation.

Pakistan Angle Adds to Concerns
The development has also drawn attention because of Saudi Arabia’s growing defence ties with nuclear-armed Pakistan. In recent months, Pakistan’s Defence Minister suggested that, if required, Islamabad’s nuclear capabilities could be made available to Saudi Arabia. Against this backdrop, analysts believe the new US-Saudi nuclear agreement carries strategic implications that extend beyond energy cooperation, reflecting Washington’s broader regional approach toward Iran and the evolving geopolitical dynamics of West Asia.
