Trump Backs Irish Reunification: Says Seeing a United Ireland Would Be a ‘Wonderful Thing’

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has reignited debate over the future of Northern Ireland after saying he would “love to see” the island of Ireland united. During a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump expressed support for the reunification of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which remains part of the United Kingdom.

“I don’t want to cause any trouble, but I would love to see it united,” Trump said. He went on to suggest that Irish reunification could eventually happen and argued that it might be better for it to happen sooner rather than later. At the same time, he acknowledged that the UK would have an important say in any such development.

A Sensitive Issue With a Violent History
Trump’s remarks touch on one of the most politically sensitive issues in Ireland and the UK. The conflict in Northern Ireland, commonly known as the Troubles, lasted for decades and claimed approximately 3,600 lives. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement, reached with significant US involvement, largely brought an end to the decades of violence. However, the constitutional question remains unresolved. Northern Ireland is currently part of the UK, while a significant section of the population supports reunification with the Republic of Ireland. US presidents have generally approached the issue cautiously, making Trump’s direct comments particularly notable.

Trump Meets Irish President Catherine Connolly
During his Dublin visit, Trump also met Irish President Catherine Connolly. Connolly, a left-wing politician, had opposed Trump’s planned visit to Ireland during his first presidential term in 2019. She has previously described Trump as a “bully” and has also been critical of US policy in the Middle East. Despite their political differences, the two leaders met during Trump’s visit.

Trump’s Ireland Golf Visit
Trump’s trip to Ireland is also linked to his longstanding interest in golf. During the visit, he is expected to attend the Irish Open at his coastal golf resort in Doonbeg. The trip follows his appearance at the Nexo Championship at his golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland, in August 2026. Trump has frequently combined official travel with visits to his golf properties and tournaments hosted at his resorts.

Trump’s Remark Could Stir Fresh Debate
Trump’s comments are unlikely to settle the question of Northern Ireland’s constitutional future, but they could add fresh momentum to an already sensitive political debate. Any change in Northern Ireland’s constitutional status would involve complex political and legal processes, as well as the consent of the people of Northern Ireland. For now, Trump’s message is clear: he says he would welcome a united Ireland—but acknowledges that any such move would have major implications for both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
