Anthropic Enters Biology Research, Sets Up Wet Lab to Explore AI-Driven Drug Discovery

New Delhi: Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude AI model, is expanding beyond software and entering the field of biological and pharmaceutical research.

According to a report, the company has quietly established a biology-focused wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where researchers will explore how AI can be applied to scientific experiments and drug discovery.

The move signals Anthropic’s growing interest in using AI for work that extends beyond answering questions, generating content and writing computer code.

Claude AI to Support Scientific Research
Anthropic plans to use its Claude AI models to assist scientists with biological research and pharmaceutical development. Unlike a conventional software environment, a wet lab is a facility where researchers conduct physical experiments involving biological materials, chemicals and other laboratory substances.

The company is exploring ways in which AI can help researchers understand scientific problems, plan experiments and process information, while physical laboratory systems carry out the experimental work.


  • AI and Robots Could Work Together
    One of the key elements of Anthropic’s approach is the integration of AI with automated and robotic laboratory systems.

    Under such a model, Claude could help scientists plan or interpret experiments, while robotic equipment performs certain physical procedures inside the laboratory. Human researchers would continue to oversee the process rather than allowing the AI system to operate entirely on its own.

    This approach could potentially allow researchers to automate repetitive laboratory tasks while using AI to assist with analysis and experimental planning.

    Focus on Under-Researched Diseases
    Anthropic is also interested in applying AI to research involving diseases that have historically received less attention from major pharmaceutical companies.

    The company hopes AI-assisted research could help accelerate work in areas where treatments remain limited or unavailable. However, the initiative is still at an early stage, and there is no indication that Anthropic has already developed a new medicine as a result of the project.

    Drug development is a lengthy process. Even when a potential treatment is identified in laboratory research, it generally has to undergo extensive pre-clinical testing, clinical trials and regulatory review before it can become available to patients.

    Research Still in the Pre-Clinical Stage
    For now, Anthropic’s work is focused on early-stage, pre-clinical research rather than testing medicines on human patients. The company’s entry into wet-lab research is therefore better understood as an effort to explore how AI can contribute to the scientific discovery process, rather than as evidence that an AI-developed drug is ready for use.

    Anthropic’s move reflects a broader expansion of AI into scientific fields, with companies exploring applications ranging from biology and chemistry to pharmaceutical research. The development also highlights a changing role for AI models such as Claude: instead of being used exclusively as digital assistants, they are increasingly being explored as tools that can support scientists working on real-world experiments and complex research problems.
