Sikkim Landslide Fury: 7 Houses, 6 Govt Quarters Damaged in Rimbhi; Over 128 Evacuated

Gangtok: Continuous torrential rainfall has triggered a major landslide in Rimbhi village of West Sikkim, causing extensive damage to residential and government buildings and disrupting road connectivity. Seven houses and six quarters belonging to the Electricity Department were severely damaged after massive volumes of soil, rocks and debris swept down the hillside.

Several structures were reportedly washed away by the debris. No casualties have been reported so far.

The landslide occurred in Rimbhi village under the Yuksom-Tashiding Assembly constituency of West Sikkim. Persistent heavy rain caused large quantities of earth and rocks to slide down the hillside, spreading debris across parts of the village.

More Than 128 Residents Evacuated

Following the incident, the district administration and local rescue teams launched evacuation and relief operations. More than 128 people have so far been shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have advised residents to stay away from vulnerable slopes and other areas at risk of further landslides. Officials are closely monitoring the situation as continued rainfall has heightened the risk in several hilly areas of the state.

Rimbhi-Khecheopalri Road Blocked

The landslide has also severely affected local connectivity. Huge quantities of mud, soil and rocks have blocked the Rimbhi-Khecheopalri road, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Teams are working to clear the debris and restore road connectivity. However, ongoing rainfall could hamper both debris-clearing and restoration operations.

Rain Disrupts Connectivity Across Sikkim

The impact of incessant rain has been reported from several other parts of Sikkim as well. Traffic movement on multiple roads has been disrupted, while rain-related problems have been reported along stretches of National Highway-10.

Connectivity between Singtam and Gangtok has also been affected. Authorities have warned of the continuing danger of falling rocks, soil and debris on mountain roads, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

DDMA Issues Safety Advisory

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel to landslide-prone areas.

People have been advised to monitor weather updates and local alerts and to travel only when necessary. Authorities have also warned that debris and rocks can fall suddenly along mountain roads during heavy rain.

Relief and rescue operations remain underway in Rimbhi. The administration is assessing the extent of the damage while affected residents remain relocated to safer areas.

So far, no loss of life has been reported.
