Assam Flood Crisis Deepens: Death Toll Reaches 87, Over 1.28 Lakh People Hit Across Seven Districts

Dispur: Assam continues to battle one of its worst flood disasters this year, with the death toll climbing to 87 and more than 1.28 lakh people affected across seven districts, according to the latest bulletin issued by the state government on Monday.

The relentless floods have submerged hundreds of villages, damaged homes and roads, and devastated vast stretches of agricultural land. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that the latest two flood-related deaths were reported from Sivasagar, the district worst affected by the calamity.

The worst-hit districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Biswanath, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur. Officials said 380 villages remain underwater, while nearly 14,230 hectares of cropland have been inundated, leaving thousands of families struggling to rebuild their lives.

Of the 1,28,071 people affected, 55,200 are from Sivasagar, 34,050 from Charaideo, and 20,209 from Jorhat. The state government has set up 38 relief camps, where around 12,000 displaced residents have taken shelter. Relief materials and essential supplies are being distributed in the affected areas.

Although water levels have started receding in some places, authorities warn that the crisis is far from over. Concerns over damaged infrastructure, loss of livelihoods, and access to safe drinking water continue to pose major challenges.

In Golaghat district, the Dhansiri River is flowing above the danger mark near Numaligarh, prompting authorities to urge residents in low-lying areas to shift to safer locations and stay away from rivers and flooded zones.

Among the worst-affected areas is Nepali Khuti village in Sivasagar district. Once known for its thriving dairy farming, the village of around 150 families has suffered extensive losses, with floodwaters destroying homes, cattle, and livelihoods, leaving residents facing an uncertain future.
