New Delhi. Former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has been elected as the new leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party. With this, he is going to become the next Prime Minister of the country. He will replace Justin Trudeau, who resigned from the post earlier this year. 59-year-old Carney secured 86 percent of the votes of the members.
This is the first time in Canada that an outsider who has no political background will become the Prime Minister. Carney said his experience as the first person to serve as governor of two G7 central banks shows he is best suited to deal with Trump.
Who is Mark Carney?
Mark Carney was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories Canada. He spent his childhood in Edmonton. After this, he went to the US and studied economics from Harvard University. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he earned first a master’s degree and then a doctorate in economics in 1995 from Oxford University. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008.
His leadership was quickly recognized and in 2010 Time Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential leaders in the world. In 2011, Reader’s Digest Canada named him the most trusted Canadian and in 2012 Euromoney Magazine declared him “Central Bank Governor of the Year”. In 2013 Carney became the Governor of the Bank of England. He became the first non-British citizen to lead this organization in its 300-year history. He served in this position till 2020.
In recent years, Mark Carney held important positions such as UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance and Head of Transition Investing at Brookfield Asset Management. However, he decided to resign from these posts and join the race to become the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Trudeau said these things in his farewell speech
Justin Trudeau gave his last speech as Canadian Prime Minister on Monday. In his farewell speech, Trudeau urged people to stay engaged in the future of the country. Speaking to a crowd of Liberal Party members, Trudeau expressed pride in his tenure. He said, “Don’t get me wrong, I am very proud of what we have done in the last 10 years. But tonight is about our future as a party, as a country.” He addressed economic concerns, making a subtle reference to US President Donald Trump’s policies. “We are a country that will fight when we have to,” he said.
He called the present a nation-defining moment and said democracy and freedom require sustained effort. “It takes courage, sacrifice, hope and hard work. We should not dwell on all the great things we have achieved in the last 10 years. Instead, we should be inspired to achieve even more in the next 10 years and the decades to come,” he said.
