How Was Vijay Thalapathy’s Government Formed in Tamil Nadu? Claims Surface Regarding Rival Stalin’s Role in Securing a Majority

Chennai. Following the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, a major political upheaval has been witnessed in the state’s politics. Actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy is set to take the oath as Chief Minister today. Although his party, the TVK, emerged as the single largest party in the elections, it did not secure a majority on its own. Consequently, political maneuvering regarding government formation continued for several days. Now, the DMK has claimed that its party chief, M.K. Stalin, played a pivotal role in helping the TVK reach the majority mark.

TVK: The Single Largest Party, Yet Short of a Majority
In the election results declared on May 4, the TVK secured the status of the single largest party by winning 108 seats. It was followed by the AIADMK and the DMK. However, the TVK fell short of the majority figure—the minimum number of seats required to form a government in the 234-member Assembly. Following the results, a state of political uncertainty prevailed in Tamil Nadu, and questions began to arise regarding who would ultimately become the Chief Minister.

DMK Claims: Stalin Secured the Support
DMK leader A. Saravanan claimed that M.K. Stalin persuaded his alliance partners to extend their support to the TVK. According to him, Stalin did not wish to see a constitutional crisis unfold in the state; therefore, he took this decision after extensive consultations. Saravanan stated that the DMK’s alliance partners played a crucial role in elevating Vijay Thalapathy to the post of Chief Minister, and all of this was made possible through Stalin’s initiative.

Congress Was the First to Offer Support
During the process of government formation, the Congress party was the first to decide to extend its support to the TVK. The DMK subsequently took aim at the Congress over this move, remarking that the party had adopted a stance divergent from that of the ‘INDIA’ alliance. DMK leaders argued that the seats secured by the Congress in Tamil Nadu were largely the result of the hard work put in by the DMK and its cadres; yet, despite this fact, the Congress proceeded to extend its support to the TVK. Even with the Congress’s backing, the TVK still fell short of the majority mark. Subsequently, the Left parties and the VCK also extended their support to Vijay Thalapathy’s party. With this, the TVK secured the support of 120 legislators, paving the way for the formation of the government.

Vijay to Take Oath as Chief Minister Today
Having garnered the necessary support, Vijay Thalapathy is now set to take the oath of office as Chief Minister. Political observers view this as a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, wherein a new face hailing from the film industry has successfully ascended to power.
