New Delhi: Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is once again under legal scrutiny. The US state of Tennessee has filed a lawsuit accusing Instagram of being intentionally designed to keep teenagers hooked, contributing to social media addiction and worsening the mental health crisis among young users.
According to a Reuters report, the case is expected to be examined in the coming weeks to determine whether Meta deliberately developed Instagram in a way that encourages addictive behaviour among teenagers.
The lawsuit alleges that Meta violated Tennessee’s consumer protection laws by creating features specifically aimed at increasing engagement among young users, despite being aware of the potential risks.
Internal Research Under Scrutiny
The complaint, filed by Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, claims that Meta failed to publicly disclose findings from its own internal research, which reportedly warned about Instagram’s harmful impact on teenagers’ mental health.
The lawsuit further alleges that several Meta employees informed CEO Mark Zuckerberg about these findings and the platform’s negative effects on young users. Despite these warnings, Zuckerberg allegedly failed to allocate sufficient resources to address the issue and made misleading public statements about the amount of harmful content on Instagram.
State Seeks Penalties and Platform Changes
Tennessee has asked the court to impose financial penalties on Meta and direct the company to make significant changes to Instagram’s design. The lawsuit specifically highlights features such as autoplay, Instagram Reels, and push notifications, alleging they are engineered to maximize user engagement and encourage excessive use.
Meta Rejects the Allegations
Responding to the lawsuit, Meta said the allegations are primarily based on content posted by Instagram users. The company also argued that Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act protects online platforms from legal liability for content shared by third-party users.
The case is expected to become another major legal challenge for Meta as regulators and governments continue to scrutinize the impact of social media platforms on children’s and teenagers’ mental health.
