Iran: Former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to be Buried Three Months After His Death

New Delhi: Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, passed away on February 28. He is now set to be laid to rest more than three months after his death. The Iranian government has announced three days of national mourning and a public funeral ceremony for Khamenei’s burial.

Preparations for this funeral ceremony, held in memory of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have already begun in several major cities across the country. Tehran’s Deputy Mayor, Mohammad Amin Tavakoli-Zadeh, has provided details regarding the arrangements for this entire event.

Speaking to Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, Deputy Mayor Tavakoli-Zadeh stated that Khamenei’s final funeral procession will pass through several major cities across the nation.

Mourning Processions to be Held in Three Cities
This mourning procession for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be held in the capital, Tehran, as well as in the country’s major religious centers—Qom and Mashhad. Large-scale public rallies and prayer gatherings will be organized for the general public in all three of these cities.

Main Event in Tehran to Last 24 Hours
The largest event of Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies will take place in the capital, Tehran. In Tehran alone, this main ceremony is expected to continue continuously for at least 24 hours. Maintaining security and order in the capital during this historic and deeply emotional occasion has emerged as a major challenge for the administration.

Municipal officials estimate that approximately 20 million people could gather in Tehran to bid a final farewell to their Supreme Leader. Extensive logistical and security preparations are currently underway to manage such a massive crowd and to accommodate their stay.
