New Delhi: It is difficult to understand whether the INDIA block will survive or not, if not till the Bihar elections, but by the time the West Bengal assembly elections come. Even if it survives, in what form will it appear? Who will lead it? Rahul Gandhi or Mamata Banerjee or someone else?
With West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi sticking to their respective stands, the future of the INDIA block now seems very bleak.
At present, the biggest problem in the INDIA block is created by the Congress. In the Lok Sabha elections, the undeclared leadership of the INDIA block was with the Congress, but even in that, Mamata Banerjee was seen as different. After the Maharashtra elections, mobilization in favor of Mamata Banerjee had started – and after the Delhi elections, a clear split has started in the INDIA block.
After the Delhi elections, the existence of the INDIA block was said to be over. Some political experts have predicted the same. Omar Abdullah may be disappointed, but from Mamata Banerjee’s words it seems that she is still in favour of the opposition staying united, but she is unable to tolerate Congress in the INDIA block.
Mamata Banerjee wants a Congress-free INDIA block
When Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the role of the INDIA block during the Delhi elections, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s reaction was that the India alliance is united.
In a conversation with the media, Akhilesh Yadav said, when the INDIA alliance was being formed… it was said that the INDIA alliance will strengthen the party which is strong there… Aam Aadmi Party is strong in Delhi, that is why the Samajwadi Party has given its support to it. The question is about Delhi… our objective is that BJP should lose… when the objective is one, there is no truth or lie.
In fact, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress were fighting against each other in the Delhi Assembly elections. Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee had supported Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party. When the results came, it was known that the Congress candidates also played a big role in Arvind Kejriwal’s defeat.
After the results of the Delhi elections were announced, Omar Abdullah had shared a picture on the social site X and wrote, ‘Fight more amongst yourselves’ – and now Mamata Banerjee has also come on the same issue, but her target is Congress. Looking at the politics of Jammu and Kashmir, it can be assumed that Congress will also be the target of Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah has even said that India Block should be abolished, because there is neither leadership nor agenda.
On the matter of clarifying his stand on the results of the Delhi elections through social media, Omar Abdullah says, ‘If I didn’t do it, would I start crying… the results were such, either I had to laugh… or cry, and I don’t like crying.’
But, he also refuses to say anything more about India Block. Talking to journalists, he says, if there is ever a meeting of India Block, I will say inside the meeting, I tell you people something… then unnecessary uproar is created.
Mamata Banerjee is also upset with the infighting of India Block, but she wants to keep Congress away from the opposition alliance. Mamata Banerjee has also claimed that the name India Block was given by her, she also created it, and now she also wishes to lead, but only while sitting in West Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee still believes that political parties with similar ideologies will have to develop a mutual understanding so that the anti-BJP votes are not divided… otherwise, it will be difficult for India Block to stop BJP at the national level.
Citing the results of Maharashtra and Delhi elections, Mamata Banerjee says that Congress did not help Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, and Aam Aadmi Party did not help Congress in Haryana. In Mamata Banerjee’s view, the confrontation between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party in both the elections was the reason for the defeat, and BJP got the chance to win.
But, as soon as it comes to West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee shows the same attitude as Aam Aadmi Party has shown towards Congress in Haryana and Delhi.
For other states, Mamata Banerjee’s opinion is that everyone should be together, but she does not accept this in her area, Congress has nothing in Bengal… I will fight alone… we are enough alone. Mamata Banerjee is claiming to win more than two-thirds of the seats in the 2026 West Bengal elections.
