ISRO gets big success, successful docking of SpaDeX

January 16, 2025

New Delhi: ISRO has successfully completed the docking of satellites under its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX). The space agency has announced this by posting on social media. ISRO said in a social media post, “India has registered its name in space history. Good ISRO’s SpaDeX mission has achieved historic docking success. Feeling proud to see this moment.”

Earlier on January 12, ISRO brought two spacecraft to a distance of three meters and then took them back to a safe distance in an attempt to dock the satellites in its experiment. Let us tell you that ISRO successfully launched the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission on December 30, 2024.

Docking window will close on January 20
The chaser satellite (SDX01) of the SpaDeX mission has 4.5 kg of propellant, which is enough for two dockings and undockings. However, the current operational window will close on January 20. After this, the next suitable docking window will open on March 25, leaving a gap of 65 days.

Sunlight remains a challenge
The main reason for the delay in the mission is the lack of sunlight. Due to the position of the satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the solar panels are not able to generate the required energy. Former ISRO scientist Manish Purohit said, “Due to the rotation speed of the Earth, tracking of satellites becomes complicated after every orbit. Satellites complete one orbit in 90 minutes, moving at a speed of 7 km/second, due to which the ground station has only 15-20 minutes of contact time.”

The SpaDeX mission is an important step for India, which aims to develop automatic rendezvous and docking technology. This technique will be essential for future space missions, such as missions to the Moon and beyond. The success of this mission will put India among the few countries that have mastered this advanced technology. Currently, the US, Russia and China are the leaders in this technology.

After the success of the SpaDeX mission, ISRO plans to establish a crew space station in the Moon’s orbit by 2040 and complete a sample-return mission from the Moon’s south pole by 2028. The ISRO team is fully alert and confident about the mission. With intensive testing and simulations, ISRO is ready for the success of the SpaDeX mission. Experts and space enthusiasts expect this historic attempt to be successful in March 2025.
