Government busy in changing ‘Islamic names’ of cities and villages, Hindu organizations handed over the list of 55 more places

January 16, 2025

Bhopal: In Madhya Pradesh too, the government has rapidly started working on the strategy of changing the Islamic names of cities, villages and areas. It was started by the former Chief Minister of the state Shivraj Singh Chauhan. But now the current Chief Minister Mohan Yadav seems to be going ahead of him. A few days ago, the CM changed the names of three villages in his hometown Ujjain, while on last Sunday, the names of 11 villages with Islamic names were changed simultaneously. Now Hindu organizations have handed over the list of 55 other places to the Chief Minister for changing the names. At the same time, the opposition is now asking that sir, you will change the names, but when will you change the situation?

First of all, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav changed the names of three villages of his home district Ujjain. Ghazni Khedi village was renamed Maa Chamunda Nagari, Jahangirpur was renamed Jagdishpur and Maulana village was renamed Vikram Nagar.

Actually, William Shakespeare had said ‘what is there in a name’ but contrary to this, the entire politics of Madhya Pradesh is revolving around names. From changing the names of cities and villages, the name of ‘Vice Chancellor’ has been changed to ‘Kulguru’ here. Although, the names of cities and even railway stations have been changed in Madhya Pradesh before, but this is the first time when the wave of changing names has officially reached the Panchayat level. After Ujjain, on Sunday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav created a new record by changing the names of 11 villages with Urdu names in Shajapur simultaneously.

The villages of Shajapur district whose names were changed include

  1. Mohammadpur Machhnai – Mohanpur
  2. Dhabla Hussainpur – Dhabla Ram
  3. Mohammadpur Pawadia – Rampur Pawadia
  4. Khajuri Alahdad – Khajuri Ram
  5. Hajipur – Hirapur Gaon
  6. Nipaniya Hisamuddin – Nipaniya Dev
  7. Richdi Moradabad – Richdi
  8. Khalilpur – Rampur
  9. Ghatti Mukhtiyarpur – Ghatti
  10. Unchod – Unchavad
  11. Shekhpur Bongi – Awadhpuri

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav says that now the names of villages and cities will be kept in accordance with public sentiments. People demanded that the names be changed, so now the names are being changed. Addressing the public, CM Yadav said, “When you said that some names are getting stuck and are bothering, am I not doing anything wrong? If there is no Mohammad in Mohammadpur Machhnai, then what is Mohammadpur? If there is a Muslim brother, then keep the name. So now the name is changed to Mohanpur. Forget about us, there are 33 crore gods and goddesses, so name them after anyone.”

Now when the Chief Minister himself talks about changing names, why should the people of his party or government stay behind. When Ujjain resident Mohan Yadav changed the names of the villages of the district, after this Ujjain MP Anil Ferozia demanded to change the names of Anda Gali, Begumbagh and Topkhana located in the old city.

The leaders demanded to change a few more names, but a Hindu organization of Bhopal handed over the names of 55 such places to CM Mohan Yadav, which currently have Islamic names.

The places whose name change has been demanded from CM Mohan Yadav include Shahjahanabad, Peergate, Jahangirabad, Idgah Hills, Halali Dam of Bhopal Goharganj, Neerganj, Begumganj, Gairatganj, Obedullaganj, Sultanpur of Raisen district Apart from this, Barkhedi, Pipaliya Jahar Peer, Mubarakpur, Umravganj, Salamatpur, Shahabad, Alampur are included.

Chandrashekhar Tiwari, an officer of the Sanskruti Bachao Manch, said that the names of 55 places whose names smell of invaders and are symbols of slavery should be changed. If you want to name an area, then name it after the Shehnai player Bismillah Khan, after APJ Abdul Kalam, because they increased the prestige of the country. But who were these Shahjahan, Jahangir and Aurangzeb? What is their history, that areas were named after them?

Now the government and Hindu organizations may be demanding to change the Islamic names, but historians say that in fact there is a story behind every Islamic name. Most of the areas are named after the people who settled them. They were also a part of history, then why the discrimination?

Historian Rizwan Ansari said, the area inhabited by Begum Shahjahan of Bhopal became Shahjahanabad, the area made by Jahangir became Jahangirabad. Obedullaganj was named after General Obedulla. Nasrullaganj was named after Nawab Nasrullah Khan, who was the elder son of Sultan Jahan.

On the other hand, Congress has directly alleged that the BJP government is targeting Muslims, hence bulldozers are being run on their houses and the names of areas with Muslim names are being changed. Anyway, the process of changing names may have started in the Shivraj government but it has gained speed in the Mohan government. It remains to be seen whether the situation changes here with the change of name or not.
