Washington: The ongoing protests against the Islamic regime in Iran have escalated into a violent outburst. Security forces are reportedly resorting to gunfire in several locations, under the direction of the Iranian government. A doctor in Tehran, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Time magazine that at least 217 protesters have been reported dead in just six hospitals in the capital, Tehran, most of whom were killed in gunfire. However, Time magazine has not independently verified these figures.
This death toll, if accurate, points to a brutal repression of anti-government protests in Iran. Since the protests began, the government has almost completely shut down internet and phone connections in the country. These protests began on December 28th, protesting the economic crisis, but have now spread to all 31 provinces of Iran, demanding the overthrow of the Islamic regime. Protesters are chanting slogans like “Freedom” and “Down with the dictator.”
Protesters set fire to the Al-Rasul Mosque.
An Iranian doctor, speaking to Time magazine, claimed, “As the protests intensified, security forces opened fire directly on protesters in several areas. Bodies were removed from hospitals on Friday. Most of the dead were young people. Several protesters were killed on the spot when machine gun fire was fired outside a police station in northern Tehran. At least 30 people were shot in this incident.” Most rallies remained peaceful, but there have been reports of vandalism at some government buildings. Iranian protesters set fire to the Al-Rasul Mosque in Tehran.
Iran will not bow down to the rioters: Ali Khamenei
Human rights organizations have reported a lower death toll than the doctor’s claim. According to the Washington-based Human Rights Activist News Agency, at least 63 people have died so far, including 49 civilians. However, due to government-controlled media in Iran and strict restrictions on foreign news agencies, death figures are being reported differently. Meanwhile, the Iranian leadership has issued a strong message. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that the Islamic Republic will not bow down to rioters.
Parents urged to keep children away from protests
Tehran’s prosecutor has warned that protesters could face the death penalty. Meanwhile, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official has urged parents to keep their children away from demonstrations or not report them if they are shot. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned the Khamenei-led Islamic regime of dire consequences if protesters are killed. Iran’s economic crisis, the Iranian rial’s fall to a record low against the dollar, water shortages, and power outages have fueled public anger against the Islamic regime.
