New Delhi: Domestic cooking gas (LPG) has become costlier again. The price of LPG has been raised by ₹29 per cylinder, effective from June 7. This marks the second hike in three months. The increase in cooking gas prices will apply nationwide. The move is attributed to the crisis involving Iran; state-run fuel retailers are reportedly grappling with rising global energy costs.
According to news agency reports, sources indicate that starting June 7, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi will rise from ₹913 to ₹942. Previously, a hike of ₹60 per cylinder was implemented on March 7, following disruptions in global energy supplies and a surge in international fuel prices caused by conflict in West Asia.
Industry sources argue that the previous hike only partially offset the losses incurred on domestic LPG sales. Prior to the recent revision, state-owned oil marketing companies were facing a loss of approximately ₹703 on every LPG cylinder sold.
Commercial LPG cylinders also saw a price hike earlier this month
On June 1, there was a significant increase in the price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders. In Delhi, the price of a commercial cylinder rose by ₹42, reaching ₹3,113.50. Meanwhile, in Kolkata, the price increased by ₹53.50 to reach ₹3,255.50. Furthermore, the price of the 5 kg FTL cylinder—used by small traders and citizens—was raised by ₹11. In Delhi, this smaller cylinder is now available at the new rate of ₹821.50.
Petrol and diesel prices had already risen by up to ₹7
This hike in LPG prices comes amidst a broader trend of rising oil prices. Since May, petrol and diesel prices have been raised by a total of ₹7.50 per litre, while Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) rates have increased by approximately ₹6 per kilogram.
According to industry sources, despite the recent hikes, oil companies are selling petrol and diesel below cost, incurring a loss of approximately ₹11 per litre on petrol and ₹33.6 per litre on diesel.
