Russia’s Massive Ukraine Assault: 500 Drones Reportedly Launched, 9 Killed; Zelenskyy Says Moscow Wants ‘Destruction’

September 13, 2026

Kyiv: Russia launched a massive wave of airstrikes across multiple regions of Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring several others, according to Ukrainian officials. Residential areas and critical infrastructure were reportedly damaged in the attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched around 500 drones against targets across Ukraine since early Saturday. He accused Moscow of increasingly shifting its focus from the battlefield to attacks on Ukraine’s economy and facilities that support civilians during the war.

  • Civilians Targeted in Kramatorsk

In Kramatorsk, a key frontline city, local authorities said Russian forces struck private civilian vehicles in three separate incidents within approximately 90 minutes.

The city council said three people were killed and four injured, stressing that the vehicles were civilian and were not military targets. According to local authorities, the victims were traveling to carry out their daily activities.

Grocery Store Among Targets in Zhytomyr Region

In the Zhytomyr region, Governor Vitaliy Bunechko said two people were killed in an attack on a grocery store in Zviahel.

He also reported damage or strikes involving two petrol stations and a foreign-invested enterprise in the region.

Deadly Strikes Reported in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih

The attacks also caused casualties elsewhere.

Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov said two people were killed and 11 injured in strikes in the region.

Meanwhile, in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Zelenskyy, the head of the military administration reported that two people were killed in overnight drone and missile attacks.

The Russian military, meanwhile, said its forces had targeted industrial facilities including the Zaporizhstal steel plant, Interpipe Steel in Dnipro, and several facilities in Kryvyi Rih.

    Odesa Reports More Casualties

Oleh Kiper, governor of the Odesa region, said approximately 40 people were injured in attacks stretching from the previous night through Saturday.

Separately, three deaths were reported following Ukrainian drone strikes in the Russian-controlled parts of the eastern Donetsk region, according to the report.

    Moldova Temporarily Closes Airspace

The escalation also had an impact beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Moldova temporarily closed its airspace and seven border crossings for around an hour after drones were reportedly spotted near the country’s border.

The development highlighted the growing regional risks posed by the continuing drone and missile war.

Russia Says Odesa Ports Were Targeted

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had struck a commercial vessel allegedly carrying military cargo at the port of Odesa, along with two ships at the port of Chornomorsk.

Ukraine responded with a strike inside Russia, targeting Togliattikauchuk, described as Russia’s largest synthetic rubber producer, in Tolyatti in the Samara region.

Local mayor Ilya Sukhikh said several residential buildings were damaged and one person was injured.

War Escalates Beyond the Front Lines

The latest exchange underlines how the Russia-Ukraine war continues to extend well beyond the immediate battlefield.

While Russia says its strikes are directed at military and industrial targets, Ukrainian authorities continue to report civilian casualties and damage to residential and economic infrastructure.

With hundreds of drones reportedly deployed in the latest wave and Ukraine responding with strikes deep inside Russian territory, the conflict’s aerial dimension is becoming increasingly intense—and the risk to civilians and critical infrastructure continues to grow.
