New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is once again in the news. The Thiruvananthapuram MP was absent from the meeting of Congress Lok Sabha MPs chaired by Rahul Gandhi. However, according to party sources, Tharoor had informed the party about his absence in advance. Besides Tharoor, another senior Congress leader, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari, also did not attend the meeting.
According to Tharoor’s social media X timeline, he was present at an event organized by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation in Kolkata last night. This is not the first time Tharoor’s absence from important party meetings has been discussed. Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had clarified that he had not deliberately skipped the party’s strategy group meeting held on December 1. He had stated that he was on a flight returning from Kerala at the time. He said, “I didn’t skip the meeting; I was coming from Kerala and was on a flight.”
That meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, was to discuss the party’s strategy for the winter session. Tharoor’s absence had sparked discussion in political circles, as he had also missed a party meeting on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) due to health reasons. According to Tharoor’s office, the MP was traveling with his 90-year-old mother on a flight, making it impossible for him to reach Delhi on time. Additionally, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal could not attend the meeting due to being busy campaigning for local body elections in Kerala.
Recently, Tharoor was also in the spotlight when he was the only Congress leader invited to the state banquet hosted by the President in honor of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera had subtly remarked on this, saying that everyone’s conscience speaks. When my leaders are not invited and I am invited, one should understand why and who is playing the game, and why we shouldn’t be a part of it. In this context, Shashi Tharoor’s repeated absence from important Congress party meetings has become a topic of discussion within the party.
