Sugar Prices Soar: Shivraj Chouhan Says “Arrangements Are Being Made, Don’t Worry”

Raisen: Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, on a one-day tour, where he attended an event for female students, felicitated meritorious students and reviewed the implementation of Central government schemes.

However, a brief remark by Chouhan on the sharp rise in sugar prices became one of the key talking points of his visit.

After the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, Chouhan was asked about the rising price of sugar while he was leaving. The Union Minister responded briefly, saying, “Arrangements are being made; don’t worry.”

Focus on Girls’ Education

Addressing the main programme at Government Girls’ College, Chouhan said financial difficulties should not prevent talented daughters from pursuing their education.

A help desk has been established at the college to assist students with information about the Azim Premji Scholarship Scheme, including eligibility requirements, the application process and document uploading.

The Union Minister also interacted via video conference with female students from government colleges across the district and urged them to complete their scholarship applications within the stipulated time.

Meritorious Students Receive Laptops

During the programme, students who performed exceptionally well in the Class 10 and 12 board examinations were felicitated with laptops and certificates of appreciation.

Chouhan later inaugurated a newly constructed computer laboratory at the college by cutting the ribbon. He inspected the facility and interacted with students.

As part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, the Union Minister also planted a sapling on the college campus and urged people to contribute towards environmental conservation.

DISHA Meeting: Review of Central Schemes

Chouhan subsequently reached the Raisen Collectorate, where he chaired a review meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA).

Officials, including Collector Arun Kumar Vishwakarma, Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Gupta and District Panchayat CEO Kamal Solanki, attended the meeting.

The Union Minister reviewed various Central government schemes point by point and directed officials to ensure that ongoing construction projects were completed within the निर्धारित timelines while maintaining quality standards.

Sanchi MLA Dr Prabhuram Choudhary, Bhojpur MLA Surendra Patwa, Zila Panchayat President Yashwant Meena, former Cabinet Minister Rampal Singh and other public representatives were also present.

ISMA Says There Is No Sugar Shortage

Meanwhile, amid the sudden spike in sugar prices, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has said that there is no shortage of sugar in the country.

The association expects retail prices to ease in the coming days, citing the government’s permission for duty-free sugar imports and the imposition of stock limits on traders and bulk consumers.

According to government data, the average retail price of sugar across India stood at ₹63.05 per kg on Monday, up nearly 29% from ₹48.73 per kg a month earlier.

The maximum retail price was reported at ₹75 per kg, while the modal price was around ₹65 per kg.

With prices rising sharply, Chouhan’s assurance that “arrangements are being made” has added to expectations that government measures could soon help bring relief to consumers.
