Prayagraj. Kumbh is not only a spiritual and cultural festival, but it has also played an important role in the independence of India. Linguist Prithvinath Pandey says that in the year 1857, the Tirthpurohit ‘Prayagwal’, who showed the path of salvation, supported the revolutionaries.

However, he did not directly participate in the war. But, when Maharani Lakshmibai reached Prayagraj, she took shelter in the house of a Prayagwal (Rajpurohit). Due to this, the Kumbh festival also got associated with the freedom struggle. In those days, the freedom movement was in full swing in the country. In the year 1918, when Mahatma Gandhi reached Prayagraj on the occasion of Kumbh, he not only took a bath in the Sangam, but also had a meeting with the saint community and interacted with the pilgrims.

This had increased the concern of the British government. After this, there was a stir of Gandhi’s ‘Quit India’ campaign. The British had banned the sale of rail and bus tickets to the passengers coming to Prayagraj for the Kumbh in the year 1942. Because, they feared that the Kumbh area might become a place of revolution.

Still a large number of pilgrims had reached here. However, the British had said that Japan could bomb there due to the Second World War, so this was done for the safety of the pilgrims.
