Washington. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started his two-day US tour with high-profile meetings at Blair House in Washington DC. The most important of these was Prime Minister Modi’s bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump. After this meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs held a press conference and gave details of the talks between the two leaders.
Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Prime Minister has completed a very fruitful visit to America on the invitation of President Donald Trump. This visit is an indication of how much priority the two leaders give to India-US relations. He told that PM Modi met Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswami besides Tulsi Gabbard, the newly appointed Director of National Intelligence. India will host the Quad summit later this year, and the Prime Minister has also invited President Trump for this.
The Foreign Secretary said that the talks between PM Modi and Trump lasted for 4 hours at the White House. During the meeting with Trump, a lot of issues were discussed, including strategic and security cooperation, defense, trade and economic cooperation, technology, energy security and people-to-people relations, as well as regional and global issues.
The Foreign Secretary said, ‘The two leaders jointly launched the US-India Agreement for the 21st Century. This agreement is to promote opportunities and promote commerce and technology in the field of trade and investment from military partnership. For example, the leaders launched Mission 500, which aims to more than double the total two-way trade to $ 500 billion by 2030. The leaders also announced that they would negotiate the first phase of a mutually beneficial multi-sectoral bilateral trade agreement by the end of 2025.’
10-year framework prepared
The two leaders announced plans to finalize a new 10-year framework for the US-India major defense partnership in the 21st century. This framework will run from 2025 to 2035 and is expected to be finalized later this year. The two leaders also agreed to move forward on ongoing defense procurement negotiations as well as co-production agreements for a number of platforms, including land and air systems.
The Foreign Secretary said, ‘Discussing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the two leaders resolved to bring together Indian and American private industry and prepare a US-India roadmap to rapidly expand AI infrastructure by the end of the year. Both countries will work together to enable investments for industry partnerships and access to next-generation data centers, computations and processes. Both countries have emphasized on creating autonomous systems. The two leaders have decided to work further on technology.’
The two countries decided that they will adopt a joint approach to strengthen bilateral trade in goods and services. This will include increasing market access, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, and strengthening supply chain integration between the two countries. Additionally, a new commitment to make greenfield investments in high-value industries in each country has also been made, and the joint statement mentions investments of over $7 billion by Indian companies.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the issue of illegal immigrants was raised during the talks. We will take them back. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the return of illegal immigrants is not the end of the story. There is an ecosystem, against which it is the responsibility of both countries to take steps.
