
Bengaluru. Amidst growing global concern regarding the Ebola virus, a 28-year-old Ugandan woman in Bengaluru has been admitted to a government hospital as a precautionary measure. Health Department officials stated on Tuesday that the woman has been placed under special observation after exhibiting mild, Ebola-like symptoms. According to officials, the woman had recently arrived in India from an Ebola-affected region. Initially, she was staying at a hotel; however, after symptoms such as body aches emerged, she was transferred to Bengaluru’s government-run ‘Epidemic Diseases Hospital.’
Samples from Suspected Patient Sent for Testing
The Health Department informed that samples have been collected from the woman and sent for testing to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) located in Pune. The results are currently awaited. In accordance with established protocols, a re-test will also be conducted. Officials stated that the woman’s condition remains stable, and doctors are continuously monitoring her. A Health Department official explained that since the woman had arrived from an Ebola-affected area and subsequently displayed mild symptoms, she was admitted to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
WHO Declares Global Health Emergency
Notably, on May 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spreading Ebola outbreak in the Congo and Uganda as a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern.’ Following this declaration, several countries have heightened their vigilance.
Karnataka Health Department Issues Advisory on May 22
In light of these developments, the Karnataka Health Department issued an advisory last Friday. The advisory urged individuals who have recently returned from Ebola-affected African nations to monitor their health and keep themselves under observation for a period of 21 days. The Health Department has also stated that if any individual exhibits symptoms such as fever, body aches, or other suspicious signs, they should immediately contact their nearest health center. To this end, a ‘Rapid Response Team’ will also be deployed to carry out monitoring and surveillance activities.
Isolation Center Established in the Capital, Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases has been designated as an isolation center, while the Epidemic Diseases Hospital has been designated as a facility for quarantine and treatment. Meanwhile, in Mangaluru, the Srinivas Port Hospital has been established as a quarantine center, and the Wenlock District Hospital has been designated as a treatment center. Currently, the Health Department is appealing to the public to remain vigilant rather than panicking.
