Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s International Debut Put on Hold; Shreyas Iyer Dashes Hopes

New Delhi: Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his fans had been eagerly awaiting his international debut for days. However, when captain Shreyas Iyer arrived for the toss ahead of the first T20 International against Ireland, he clarified that Vaibhav would not be making his debut just yet. This means India will field the same opening pair that played in the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2026; consequently, Vaibhav will have to wait a while longer.

Shreyas Iyer Wins Toss, Elects to Bowl First
The two-match T20 series between India and Ireland has kicked off. Shreyas Iyer has also made his debut as captain. He won the toss in this match and decided to bowl first. When asked about Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s debut, the captain firmly ruled it out for the time being.

Vaibhav Must Wait for International Debut
Captain Shreyas Iyer clearly stated that, unfortunately, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is not playing. He added that Vaibhav would be given an opportunity when the time is right. He explained that the team is fielding three fast bowlers and one all-rounder for this match. Speaking about the captaincy, Iyer mentioned that he has told all the players to simply be themselves. He emphasized the need to adapt to the conditions here as quickly as possible, adding that they would focus on one match at a time without overcomplicating things.

Meanwhile, although Vaibhav’s debut hasn’t happened yet, Shreyas Iyer has certainly made his comeback—this time as captain. Notably, Iyer is returning to India’s T20 squad after a long hiatus, and he is doing so in the role of captain. Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, Team India had clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title just this past March; however, he has now not only been stripped of the captaincy but also dropped from the team entirely.
