New Delhi: India’s daughters made a historic performance at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian team defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final played at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai to become world champions for the first time. South Africa’s dream of winning the title fell short.
The Indian team’s victory wasn’t limited to the field; it also set new records in terms of broadcast and viewership. The World Cup final between India and South Africa was watched by 185 million viewers on Jio Hotstar. This figure equaled the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup final and even surpassed the average daily viewership of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The entire tournament was watched by 446 million people. The final attracted 21 million concurrent viewers and 92 million CTV viewers, equaling the previous men’s World Cup final. This victory has propelled India to new heights in women’s cricket and provided renewed enthusiasm for broadcasters.
Jio Hotstar (Sports) CEO Ishan Chatterjee said, “The Women’s World Cup 2025 has proven the growing strength of women’s cricket in India. The Indian team’s impressive performance has led to a significant increase in viewership and fan base. Now, women’s cricket is not just being watched, but celebrated.”
Ishan Chatterjee also stated that this success is a combined result of the policies of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), the hard work of the players, the support of fans, and the partnership of brands. After three consecutive defeats in the group stage, questions were raised about the Indian team, but India made a strong comeback.
In the semi-final, India successfully chased down a target of 339 against seven-time champions Australia. Jemimah Rodrigues scored an unbeaten 127 and captain Harmanpreet Kaur scored 89. India then posted a total of 298/7 in the final. Shafali Verma (87 runs, two wickets) and Deepti Sharma (58 runs, five wickets) played a key role in the team’s victory with all-round performances in the title match.
