
Kolkata. Mukul Roy, a leader of the ruling TMC party in West Bengal and former Railway Minister, has passed away. He had been ill and undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital. His son, Subhrangshu Roy, confirmed his father’s death, stating that he suffered a heart attack at 1:30 a.m. last night and could not be revived. He was 71 years old.
Founding Member of TMC
Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress and played a key role in building the party’s organization.
He was the second-in-command in the TMC after Mamata Banerjee. This is why, when the TMC came to power and secured a share in the central government, Mukul Roy was appointed Railway Minister.
In 2006, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and served as the party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha from 2009 to 2012.
Mukul Roy was known for his organizational skills and was once called the Chanakya of Bengal politics.
In the 2010s, Mukul Roy’s relationship with the TMC deteriorated. He distanced himself from the TMC, particularly after issues like the Saradha chit fund scam.
In February 2015, the party removed him from the post of National General Secretary. In September 2017, Mukul Roy resigned from the TMC.
Helped the BJP gain a foothold in Bengal
Following this, Mukul Roy joined the BJP in 2017. Mukul Roy worked at the grassroots level to help the BJP gain a foothold in Bengal.
During his time with the BJP, the party won 18 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In 2021, Mukul Roy was elected MLA from the Krishnanagar North constituency. However, he soon left the BJP and returned to the TMC. However, he was not very active after his return to the TMC.
