After imposing 25% tariff and penalty on India, Trump said – we are still negotiating

July 31, 2025

New Delhi. US President Donald Trump has announced to impose 25% tariff and additional penalty on goods coming from India. Despite this, Trump said that talks are going on between America and India regarding the trade agreement. During a press conference at the White House, Trump said that India is among those countries in the world which impose the highest tariff, and this is why its trade with America has been limited.

According to the news agency, when asked whether America is ready to negotiate with India on new tariffs, Trump said that we are still talking to them. Let’s see what happens.

Trump said that India is our friend, but it buys very little goods from us, whereas we buy a lot of goods from them. Their tariffs are very high, in many cases from 100% to 175%. Now they are ready to reduce them.

Trump attacks BRICS countries, targets India too
During the press conference, Trump also targeted India regarding the BRICS organization. He said that this organization is anti-America and is trying to weaken the power of the dollar. He said that BRICS is a group that stands against America and India is a part of it. This is a direct attack on the dollar and we will not let this happen.

Called PM Modi a friend
Trump said that as you know Prime Minister Modi is my friend, but he does not do much with us in terms of trade. He sells us a lot, but we do not buy anything from him. Do you know why? Because the tariff is very high. He said that India is ready to reduce the tariff, but let’s see what happens. Our talks with India are going on, it will be interesting to see what the result is. Whether we have an agreement or we charge them a special tariff, it doesn’t matter much.

Trump is also not happy with India-Russia relations
Apart from this, Trump also expressed displeasure over India’s purchase of energy and military equipment from Russia. He said that when the whole world is demanding Russia to stop the war in Ukraine, India is still buying oil and weapons in large quantities from Russia. He posted on Truth Social and said that India has always bought weapons from Russia and it is Russia’s largest energy buyer. In such a situation, from August 1, India will be charged 25% tariff and additional penalty.
