North Korea Again Shows Off Military Might, Tests Long-Range Cruise Missiles

December 29, 2025

Seoul: North Korea has once again demonstrated its military power. The country tested long-range strategic cruise missiles in the sea. This test was conducted to assess the reliability of the country’s nuclear capabilities. This move comes at a time when North Korea is accelerating the construction of its first nuclear submarine, increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. According to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, these missile tests were conducted near the country’s western coast on Sunday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was present during the test. He stated that testing the reliability of the country’s nuclear capabilities and demonstrating its military strength is a responsible step for self-defense and deterrence against external threats.

North Korean Military Confirms Test
On the other hand, South Korea’s military also confirmed that several cruise missiles were fired from the North Korean capital region on Sunday morning. South Korea said it is fully prepared to respond to any North Korean provocation under its military alliance with the United States.

What is the legal situation?
Regarding the international legal situation, the UN Security Council has prohibited North Korea from launching ballistic missiles. However, there is no direct ban on testing cruise missiles. Nevertheless, these missiles are considered dangerous to the US and South Korea because they fly at low altitudes, can easily change direction, and evade radar. Experts believe that in the event of war, North Korea could use them to attack US warships and aircraft carriers.

Other Recent Activities
Last week, North Korea tested new anti-aircraft missiles. It also released images of a nuclear-powered submarine, the hull of which appeared to be almost complete. North Korea has indicated that this submarine could be equipped with nuclear missiles. The nuclear submarine is one of several advanced weapons systems that Kim Jong Un wants to acquire to counter US-led security threats.

The impact of closer ties with Russia?
Some experts say that North Korea’s closer ties with Russia in recent months, including sending troops and military equipment to Russia for the war in Ukraine, could result in North Korea receiving crucial technology in return. Experts also believe that North Korea may showcase more of its weapons capabilities before the Workers’ Party Congress next year.

From US talks to Kim Jong Un’s proposal, learn more:
It is worth noting that since the failure of nuclear talks with then-US President Donald Trump in 2019, North Korea has intensified its nuclear weapons program. However, in September, Kim Jong Un indicated that talks could resume if the US abandoned its demand for North Korea’s complete nuclear disarmament. Experts believe that Kim is using his increased nuclear capabilities as leverage in potential negotiations.
