Kolkata: The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team will face the West Indies on March 1 (Sunday) in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The winner of this match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata will advance to the semi-finals, while the loser will be eliminated from the current tournament. India is the favorite in this match because of its excellent batting and bowling balance.
The Indian team began the Super 8s with a defeat to South Africa, but with a resounding victory against Zimbabwe, the Indian team has regained its confidence. If India wins against the West Indies, it could face England in the semi-finals. England has won all three of its matches in Group 2 and is at the top of the points table.
If the Indian team defeats the West Indies, it will definitely secure at least second place in Group 1 with 4 points. South Africa is almost certain to finish first, with just 4 points and a significantly better net run rate than India and the West Indies. South Africa’s final Super 8 match is against Zimbabwe on March 1st, where they appear highly likely to win.
The team that finishes first in Group 1 will play the semi-final against the second-ranked team from Group 2. The second-ranked team in Group 1 will face the table-topper from Group 2. South Africa could face New Zealand or Pakistan in the first semi-final on March 4th. England could face India/West Indies in the second semi-final, scheduled for March 5th at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The chances of a semi-final between India and Pakistan appear slim.
During the 2024 T20 World Cup, India defeated England by 68 runs in the semi-final, but this time the competition is expected to be even tougher. England performed well in the Super 8 stage. They first successfully defended a low total against Sri Lanka, then, thanks to captain Harry Brook’s brilliant century, defeated Pakistan to reach the semi-finals. England then defeated a strong team like New Zealand.
England’s batting lineup includes stalwarts like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Harry Brook, and Will Jacks. However, India’s bowling department is far superior to England’s, which could prove decisive in the match. The last T20 International between India and England was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Abhishek Sharma then destroyed England by scoring 135 runs in just 54 balls.
