Jabalpur. A heart-wrenching incident has emerged from Bargi Dam—a major tourist destination in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Here, a cruise boat packed with tourists suddenly sank in the backwaters of the Narmada River. Reports suggest that approximately 30 people were on board the cruise at the time of the accident.
While the cruise was navigating the deep backwaters of the Narmada, the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse, and strong winds began to blow. Due to the pressure from high waves and gusty winds, the cruise lost its balance and, in a matter of moments, submerged beneath the water.
Immediately following the accident, local boatmen and the administration launched rescue operations. So far, about 15 people have been safely pulled out of the water. Relief and rescue teams have recovered six bodies. Several individuals are still reported missing, and divers along with SDRF teams are actively engaged in the search for them.
Upon receiving news of the accident, senior officials from the police and district administration rushed to the scene. The injured have been transported to a nearby hospital. According to locals, the sudden onset of a storm left the cruise pilot with no opportunity to regain control of the vessel. Currently, the top priority remains locating the missing individuals as quickly as possible.
CM Mohan Yadav Monitors the Situation
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav posted an update regarding the accident on social media. The state’s Chief Executive wrote: “Operations by the local administration and rescue forces are continuously underway following the tragic cruise accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur today, caused by severe storms and strong winds. I have issued directives to Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, Tourism Minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, the Divisional In-charge ACS, the ADG, and local public representatives to reach the accident site immediately. Thanks to swift rescue efforts, 15 citizens have been saved safely. Efforts are being made to locate those who remain missing as soon as possible.” In this hour of crisis, the State Government stands with the affected families with complete sensitivity, and every possible assistance is being ensured.
Compensation of ₹4 Lakhs Announced
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that the loss of life resulting from this tragedy is deeply distressing. “My deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families. I have issued directives to provide financial assistance of ₹4 lakhs each to the families of the deceased on behalf of the State Government.”
Tickets Issued for 29 Passengers
The government provided information stating that tickets had been issued for a total of 29 passengers for the cruise ride at Bargi Dam. Of these, 15 individuals have been safely rescued, while the deaths of 6 individuals have been confirmed. Search and rescue operations for the remaining individuals are continuing on a war footing. The Jabalpur Collector and Superintendent of Police, along with the SDRF and other rescue teams, are present at the scene, and relief and rescue operations are being conducted continuously.
Administrative Negligence Exposed
The Bargi Dam tragedy has exposed instances of administrative negligence. In fact, the Meteorological Department had issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Jabalpur, warning of strong winds. The alert specifically warned of winds blowing at speeds of 40–50 kilometers per hour. Despite this warning, the cruise was permitted to operate on the Narmada River. Strong winds were already blowing while the cruise was on the river; yet, the operation of the vessel continued regardless. This proved to be the cause of the accident.
Search for Missing Persons Continues: Minister
BJP government Minister Rakesh Singh, who arrived at the accident site, stated that he has held discussions with the local administration—including the Collector—and has issued necessary directives regarding relief and rescue operations. An SDRF team has also reached the location to conduct rescue operations. “In this difficult hour, we stand in solidarity with all the affected families.”
Congress Corners BJP Government
Following this incident, political activity in Madhya Pradesh has intensified. State Congress President Jitu Patwari stated, “The news of four deaths resulting from the capsizing of a cruise boat at Jabalpur’s Bargi Dam is deeply tragic and heart-wrenching. This is not merely an accident; it raises serious questions regarding safety protocols. It is imperative to fix accountability for those responsible to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future. I pray to God for the peace of the departed souls, express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
