Europe Didn’t Back Iran Conflict; Trump Clashes with NATO Chief, Criticizes UK, France, and Italy

June 25, 2026

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again targeted his European allies. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed displeasure over the lack of cooperation during the Iran conflict, stating that several key allies had let the US down.

Explicitly naming Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, Trump remarked that the level of support expected from these nations during the conflict did not materialize. He said, “We were let down. Had another country been in such a situation, we might not even be holding this meeting today.”

The US President maintained that allies should have openly stood with the US during the military campaign against Iran. He noted that a clear offer of assistance from European nations would have sent a better message.

US Displeased with NATO Allies
President Donald Trump also expressed respect for NATO chief Mark Rutte and stated that dialogue between the US and NATO leadership would continue. However, his remarks clearly signaled that the US is not entirely satisfied with the role played by its allies.

  • In response to Trump’s criticism, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte defended the European nations. He stated that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had suffered serious damage and that leaders of the G7 nations had acknowledged the strategic outcomes of the campaign.

Mark Rutte said, “First and foremost, it was a matter of the nuclear capability that Iran was nearing the point of acquiring.” Supporting the US military action, he added that European nations had played a significant role behind the scenes.

US Aircraft Flew from European Nations
According to the NATO chief, between 4,000 and 5,000 US military aircraft operated from various bases across Europe during the six-week conflict. He noted that several European countries provided military bases, airports, and logistical facilities to the US.

Citing an example, Rutte mentioned that operations at the airport in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, had to be adjusted to meet military requirements. He acknowledged that there were differences and concerns in some instances, but overall, European allies stood with the US.

Statements from Trump and Rutte make it clear that the debate regarding roles and responsibilities between the US and its allies persists even after the war with Iran. While Trump expects more active support, NATO leadership maintains that European nations provided significant cooperation during the conflict.
