Call for India-Pakistan Dialogue: 100 Prominent Figures Write Open Letter to PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif

July 01, 2026

New Delhi: Several prominent Indian personalities have taken the initiative to restart the long-stalled dialogue between India and Pakistan. Around 100 distinguished citizens—including senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, and RJD MP Manoj Jha—have written a joint open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif. The letter advocates for restoring peace and immediately resuming formal talks between the two neighbors.

Key Proposals for Peace
The letter sent by these prominent citizens offers several significant suggestions to get relations between the two nations back on track. It calls for allowing civilian travel along the Kargil-Skardu route. Additionally, it urges the reopening of respective airspaces for commercial flights and the restoration of ‘Most Favoured Nation’ (MFN) status to strengthen trade ties. The letter also demands the full opening of the Sharda Peeth in Pakistan—alongside the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor—for pilgrims, as well as the lifting of restrictions on media personnel.

  • Dialogue is the Only Way Forward
The open letter argues that war or military confrontation can never yield a permanent solution to disputes. History bears witness to the fact that even the most complex issues are ultimately resolved at the negotiating table. This group of citizens believes that the long-standing and intricate disputes between India and Pakistan—including the Kashmir issue—can only be resolved through mutual dialogue and diplomacy.

    Political Uproar Ensues
The BJP has reacted sharply to this move. BJP leaders maintain that terrorism and dialogue cannot go hand in hand. There is no question of holding any kind of dialogue with Pakistan until it completely halts terrorist activities against India from its soil. Targeting the opposition leaders involved in this letter, the BJP has termed the move an attempt to display a soft stance towards Pakistan.
