New Delhi: Intense political maneuvering is currently unfolding in Tamil Nadu. TVK chief Vijay visited Raj Bhavan today for the second time; however, once again, he did not receive an invitation to form the government and was forced to return empty-handed. Consequently, the anger of his supporters gathered outside Raj Bhavan erupted openly. They explicitly allege that the Governor is deliberately delaying matters and is biased in favor of the BJP.
Vijay has claimed to possess the support of 112 MLAs—a figure that includes legislators from the Congress party. Despite this, he has not been invited to form the government. Angered by this turn of events, party workers launched a massive protest outside Raj Bhavan in Chennai.
‘The Place to Prove a Majority is the Assembly, Not Raj Bhavan’
The protesting workers emphatically stated that the appropriate forum for proving a legislative majority is the Legislative Assembly, not Raj Bhavan. Citing the landmark Supreme Court judgment in the S.R. Bommai case, they argued that a floor test is the only legitimate method and that the Governor should take steps in that direction. The supporters contend that, having emerged as the single largest party with 108 MLAs, the TVK—in accordance with constitutional norms—should have been invited by the Governor to form the government. However, this did not happen, a failure that has now raised a host of questions.
According to PTI, the Governor has assured Vijay that he will not extend an invitation to any other political party to form the government. Nevertheless, Vijay has been asked to complete a specific procedural requirement. The Governor has stated that Vijay must return with a list of his supporting MLAs, each bearing their individual signature. The process of administering the oath of office will not proceed until a list signed by every single supporting MLA is formally submitted. The Governor has clarified that any claim of legislative support must be conclusively substantiated on paper.
Another noteworthy development is that the Leader of the Opposition, Palaniswami, has not yet sought an appointment to meet with the Governor. Meanwhile, the intensity of the protests escalated significantly, requiring the police to exert considerable effort to bring the situation under control. These workers from Tiruppur were visibly angry, asserting that democratic processes were not being followed. These workers have now resolved to remain in Chennai until the swearing-in ceremony takes place. They maintain that they will return home only after witnessing their leader become the Chief Minister.
