Justice Verma Cash Case Report in Parliament Today; Final 3 Days of Monsoon Session Set for Stormy Showdown

New Delhi: With just three days left in Parliament’s Monsoon Session, tensions between the government and the opposition remain high. The Houses are expected to witness heated exchanges over several contentious issues, including the alleged theft of offerings at Ram Mandir and the reported lathi-charge on students at Jantar Mantar on July 20.

The opposition has been pressing the government for a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the student protest issue. Against this backdrop, the inquiry report into the alleged cash controversy involving Justice Yashwant Varma is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.

Justice Varma Inquiry Report to be Tabled
The controversy surrounding Justice Varma began in March 2025 after burnt cash was allegedly discovered in a storeroom at his official residence in Delhi following a fire. The incident triggered demands for an inquiry and calls for action against the judge.

A three-member committee was subsequently constituted to investigate the allegations. After examining documentary material and recording oral evidence, the panel has prepared its report, which is expected to be presented in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Proceedings for Justice Varma’s removal had also been initiated. He resigned from office on April 9, 2026, although the President has reportedly not accepted his resignation. At the time of the controversy, Varma was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court. He was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court.

More than 200 MPs had earlier backed the move to initiate proceedings for his removal. The tabling of the inquiry report could now trigger a fresh debate over the constitutional and legal implications of pursuing removal proceedings after a judge has submitted his resignation.

Amit Shah May Address Student Protest Issue
The government is also expected to respond to the opposition’s concerns over the student protests and the alleged lathi-charge at Jantar Mantar. Home Minister Amit Shah may make a statement in Parliament on the issue.

While the government has maintained that it is prepared to discuss the matter, it has accused the opposition of disrupting proceedings instead of allowing a structured debate.

FCRA Amendment Bill May Be Introduced
The government is also likely to introduce an amendment bill concerning the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The Congress and Trinamool Congress have opposed the proposed legislation and are demanding its withdrawal.

Sources indicate that the government may move the bill before Parliament and subsequently consider sending it to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed examination.

With only three days remaining in the Monsoon Session, Parliament is likely to witness intense political confrontation over the Justice Varma inquiry, student protests, the proposed FCRA amendments and several other contentious issues.
