India-Canada Economic Relations: Nirmala Sitharaman Arrives in Toronto; Key Issues to be Discussed at First ‘Economic and Financial Dialogue’

Washington. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Toronto on Tuesday. She is on a four-day visit, during which she will participate in the inaugural India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue. Following this, she will travel to the US to attend the G-20 Finance Ministers’ meeting.

She was welcomed at Toronto Pearson International Airport by India’s Consul General, Mahaveer Singhvi. Sitharaman will participate in the first Economic and Financial Dialogue alongside Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

What issues will be discussed?
According to an official statement, both nations will share their views on several key issues during this dialogue. These include shifts in the macroeconomic landscape and cooperation within the financial sector. Discussions will also cover investment opportunities between the two countries and shared priorities at the international level.

Another objective of this dialogue is to further strengthen the revitalized economic and financial partnership between India and Canada. Sitharaman will also attend a meeting regarding investment with heads of major businesses, involving key figures from sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.

The meeting aims to enhance business-to-business ties and explore new investment opportunities. Discussions will also focus on fostering a long-term business partnership between India and Canada, including investment prospects in GIFT City-IFSC.

In another business meeting, Sitharaman will interact with major Canadian business leaders. Discussions will center on opportunities for cooperation between India and Canada, long-term investments, and growth in the financial sector.

What will be discussed regarding the banking sector?
Senior Managing Directors and CEOs of Indian public sector banks will also participate in these discussions. This will provide an opportunity to explore avenues for greater cooperation between the two nations in the financial sector. Ways to strengthen investment-related ties will also be explored.

The Canadian Club of Toronto and the Canada-India Business Council will jointly host a special dialogue between Sitharaman and Champagne. The conversation will focus on advancing the shared economic interests of both countries.

Discussions will also cover the revitalized ties between India and Canada, the investment climate, and domestic economic priorities. The current trajectory and future direction of India-Canada economic and financial relations will also be deliberated upon.

What will Sitharaman do in the US?
During the US leg of her tour, Sitharaman will visit Chicago, Asheville, and New York from August 28 to September 2. She will participate in the G-20 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Additionally, she will hold bilateral meetings with representatives from various countries and attend several business-related meetings.
