Washington: Donald Trump has given positive indications regarding the long-awaited agreement with Iran. Trump stated that it is possible an agreement could be reached by next week, following which the Strait of Hormuz would also reopen. Trump noted that a minor issue has arisen, but it is expected to be resolved by next week. He was referring to the Israeli attack on Lebanon, an incident over which Iran is deeply displeased.
Agreement Would Be Greater Than Military Victory
Donald Trump said, “I spoke with Hezbollah and told them that there should be no further gunfire.” Subsequently, he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and urged him to halt the shooting and bombing. Since then, attacks from both sides have ceased. Trump remarked that an agreement with Iran could prove to be far more beneficial than any military victory. He added that they are working in the interest of a major nation, and therefore, their actions must be guided by that objective.
Israeli Attack on Lebanon Poses an Obstacle
The Israeli military has expanded its ground operations in Lebanon and has also sought U.S. approval for further military action. This development comes at a time when the Trump administration is actively striving to de-escalate regional tensions in pursuit of a comprehensive peace agreement with Iran. According to media reports, a ceasefire in Lebanon is also an integral part of the broader framework of the U.S.-Iran negotiations.
According to one report, over the past 48 hours, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an effort to restore the ceasefire. Under the proposed arrangement, Hezbollah was required to cease missile and drone attacks against Israel, while Israel was expected to refrain from further military operations within Lebanon. Citing U.S. officials, the report stated that President Aoun supported this initiative and asked Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to exert pressure on Hezbollah. Berri’s response was not satisfactory; instead, he insisted that Israel must first cease its attacks.
Meanwhile, Israeli and Lebanese military officials met at the Pentagon on Friday to discuss issues such as a potential ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the deployment of the Lebanese Army in southern Lebanon, and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Another meeting between diplomats from both countries is expected to take place this week.
On Monday, Donald Trump stated that negotiations with Iran are proceeding at a rapid pace. However, the ceasefire appears to be faltering in the wake of renewed attacks by Tehran. The nominal ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. is being repeatedly tested by such retaliatory strikes and counter-attacks, even as officials from both nations strive to find a negotiated solution to end the conflict.
