Major Blow to Paytm: RBI Cancels Payments Bank License

New Delhi: Paytm Payments Bank has suffered a major setback at the hands of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In a significant decision taken on Friday, the RBI revoked the banking license of Paytm Payments Bank Limited. In its official statement, the RBI stated that Paytm Payments Bank will no longer be able to conduct any form of banking operations under the Banking Regulation Act. This implies that the bank will no longer be able to provide standard banking services to either new or existing customers.

According to the central bank, the operations and management of Paytm Payments Bank were not in the interest of the general public. Furthermore, the bank failed to properly comply with several conditions associated with its payments bank license. The RBI had previously taken strict action against this bank; effective March 11, 2022, the bank had been barred from onboarding new customers.

Subsequently, various restrictions were imposed on the bank, including prohibitions on accepting deposits into accounts, crediting funds, and topping up wallets. With the revocation of its license, the future of Paytm Payments Bank has now become entirely uncertain, and this development could also have repercussions for its customers.
